The Emotional Mastery Process (EMP)

The Emotional Mastery Process (EMP) is a process that consists of 5 Questions and a series of exercises as described in my book The Kid and the King; The Hidden Inner Struggle High Achievers Must Conquer to Reignite and Re-engage with Life.   By developing emotional mastery, individuals can make better decisions and ultimately improve their performance and satisfaction.  The metaphor and Acronym OCEAN are helpful and instructive in this process.

To effectively lead oneself and others, learning how to navigate the inevitable sea of emotions that one will encounter in life is an essential skill that can be learned.  Emotional Triggers are like icebergs in the ocean that can wreak havoc on any sailor's journey.   Like icebergs, the depths of emotional triggers can not be seen from the surface.  Using the OCEAN Acronym, you can begin your exploration and live an outcome-driven life rather than expectations.

What did you observe?

Just the Facts. No Embellishments

OCEAN: CONCLUDE

What did you conclude from your observations?

Differentiate between your objective observations and subjective conclusions. 

OCEAN: EMOTION

How did you feel?

Connect the Emotional State to your conclusion.   

How did you feel when you concluded what you did?

OCEAN: ACTION

What action did you take? 

Connect what you did or didn't do to how you felt about what you observed

OCEAN: NET RESULT

What was the net result of your action?

Did it move you closer to or farther away from your intended outcome?

WHAT YOU BEGIN TO REALIZE IS THAT YOU ARE OPERATING FROM EXPECTATIONS RATHER THAN OUTCOMES
